Wyeth Launches Educational Campaign for Women About the Importance
of Consulting a Health Care Professional at Menopause
Research
Indicates Nearly 30 Percent Drop in Percentage of Women Who
Seek Information About
Menopause From Their Doctors
MADISON,
N.J., July 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wyeth (NYSE: WYE -
News) announced today that it has launched a public education
program to reinforce the importance of talking to a doctor
or other health care professionals at menopause. The company
has undertaken this educational initiative in response to
market research that suggests nearly a 30 percent drop in
the number of women who have visited their doctors due to
menopausal issues in the past three years. The campaign, featuring
actress Cheryl Ladd, is a multifaceted effort that includes
network and cable advertising and a new online resource, www.TalkingToYourDoctor.com,
where women can receive more information about health at menopause
and beyond.
Dr. Anita Nelson, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at
the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, supports the
need for this type of consumer education for menopausal women.
"There is so much new information on menopausal health
that has been learned in recent years," says Dr. Nelson.
"Menopause is an important milestone in a woman's life
and a good time to address everything from menopausal symptoms
to bone loss, exercise and nutrition. So I see a need for
a campaign like this that helps motivate my patients to start
and maintain a dialogue about their health."
In the 30-second television spots, Ladd reinforces the role
doctors and other health care professionals play in counseling
menopausal women by stating, "Today, your doctor has
more information than ever. Together, you can make decisions
that are right for you." Ladd also encourages women to
"get the facts" by talking to their doctors or other
health care professionals. Ladd is drawing upon her personal
experience with menopause and the important role her physician
played in educating her about her symptoms and creating a
health care approach that works for her.
"The reason for this initiative is to remind women that
menopause may be a good time to talk to their health care
professionals about overall health issues," says Dr.
Ginger Constantine, Vice President, Women's Health Care, Wyeth
Pharmaceuticals. "The campaign also provides tools to
help initiate those discussions."
In addition to the nationwide campaign, Wyeth will provide
a consumer Web site, www.TalkingToYourDoctor.com,
with additional menopausal health information. On the Web
site, women will find:
•
General
tips on how to talk to a doctor about menopause
•
A
Symptom Assessor -- a tool to track menopausal symptoms, their
frequency, severity, and possible impact on daily life
•
Information
on postmenopausal osteoporosis and increased risks for
other health conditions
It
is estimated that nearly 40 million U.S. women are of menopausal
age. Women at menopause may experience symptoms, such as hot
flashes and night sweats, but these recognizable symptoms
may also be accompanied by less obvious changes, such as postmenopausal
osteoporosis. In fact, up to 20 percent of a woman's expected
lifetime bone loss can occur in the years immediately following
menopause. Working in partnership with a doctor or other health
care professionals, women can ensure that they are monitoring
their risk factors, having early screening tests and making
appropriate health decisions.
